Danger In Your Driveway

Printer-friendly version

Antifreeze Fatal for Cats/DogsFlushing your car’s cooling system can do wonders for your engine. But it can also create a life-threatening hazard for your pets. Most brands of commercial antifreeze consist of 95% ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic chemical. A few licks of this sweet-tasting liquid can be fatal to a cat or dog. (A few ounces are lethal to a human.) If you or a member of your household change antifreeze in the driveway, be sure to collect ALL of the waste coolant and properly dispose of it. Also remember that your car’s cooling system can leak at any time. If you see a puddle of colored liquid in your driveway, flush it with plenty of water -- and take your car to a mechanic!Several companies market automotive antifreeze made with propylene-glycol, which is considerably less toxic than ethylene-glycol. Propylene-glycol antifreeze costs a bit more than ethylene-glycol brands, but it is also much safer for pets -- and children.Convenient stores in Birmingham which stock propylene-glycol based antifreeze include:
